Beaver College!!!     So we're getting into some really cool, unique and exceedingly rare artwork and artifacts. Evil Bass is a hand painted t-shirt by the Providence based collective Paper Rad (rip). It was exhibited in a sister show to the very first inaugural Beautiful Losers exhibit entitled Beaver College (2004). Our curatorial focus of the exhibit was the influential art collectives of the time. The show included Paper Rad (Providence) and the larger associated group Paper Rodeo (Providence), as well as Space 1026 (Philadelphia), and The Royal Art Lodge (Canada). These groups often overlapped and collaborated with many of the Beautiful Losers artists.

Paper Rad consisted of Ben Jones, Jessica Ciocci, and Jacob Ciocci and was primarily active from 2000-2008. In addition to its core members, other members included Extreme Animals, Paul Bright, C.F., Joe Grillo, Laura Grant, and Billy Grant. The Grants along with Grillo later formed Dearraindrop. Paper Rad exhibited at museums and major galleries including Deitch Projects.

Paper Rad calls its style "Dogman 99", a play on the Danish filmmaking movement Dogme 95. According to one of its project websites, the rules of Dogman 99 are: "No Wacom tablet, no scanning, pure RGB colors only, only fake tweening, and as many alpha tricks as possible". Paper Rad's visual projects often employ bright day-glo palettes juxtaposed with primary colors to create a distinctive "lo fi" look. Influences include pop art, collage, punk art and popular culture writ large. The multimedia projects incorporate MIDI audio, poor recordings of original sound effects and voices, pixelization, and other crude audio and visual components. Paper Rad recycled or appropriated obscure sounds and images from a variety of sources, including old cartoons, commercials, and late-night television.

This piece will include its current frame. Super high quality custom frame. The entire piece measures 32.5 x 28 inches.

The rest of the Beaver College lineup were:
PAPER RODEO: Matt Brinkman, Brian Chippendale, Leif Goldberg, Seth Cooper, CF, Jim Drain, and Ara Peterson among many others. Brinkman, Goldberg, Drain, and Peterson also constituted the influential noise band and art collective Forcefield and exhibited in the 2002 Whiney Biennial. Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson make up the seminal noise band Lightning Bolt. The entire group were the key members of Fort Thunder a pre-civil war textile factory in Providence. The space was used as a venue for underground music and events, as well as a living and working space for the artists.

SPACE 1026: Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Ben Woodward, Crystal Kovacs, Jim Houser, Isaac Lin, Jayson Musson, Thom Lessner, Matt Leines.

THE ROYAL ART LODGE: Marcel Dzama, Michael Dumontier, and Neil Farber.
